Did we just choose to remember the rock elements of those years as what defined that culture (or at least as I see it, completely surprised at what the top 10-20 songs were each of those years), or is that just me? The most egregious, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon came out in 1973, and on the billboard charts Money shows up at #92.ĭid these rock bands just age better as a cultural thing? It seems like most of these bands were clearly out of the mainstream. In 1971 the Rolling Stone's Sticky Fingers came out, which I believe is their best selling album (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just doing quick google searches), but Brown Sugar shows up at #16, and nothing else is on there. in 1967 Sgt Peppers Heart Club Band came out, which was I believe was their best selling album from the 60's, you'd have to scroll to #30 on the billboard top 100 to find one of their singles, All You Need is Love. I honestly couldn't believe Rhiannon was like #77 on that chart in 1976.īut when I look through the billboard top 100 singles of those years from it tells a very different story. So I'm not super well versed in the culture from the 60's and 70's, as that was well before I was born, but I thought the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, the Doors would be crushing the charts in the late 60's, and then Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman brothers, Steely Dan, Aerosmith, CCR, Fleetwood Mac etc would be chart topping in the early 70's.
